An extremely rare early inscribed hekte
Lot 2161
IONIA. Uncertain. Circa 650-600 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 9 mm, 2.35 g), Lydo-Milesian standard. Plain globular surface; around, faint traces of an uncertain script. Rev. Rectangular incuse with irregular geometric pattern. CNG 112 (2019), 264 (same dies). Triton XXIII (2020), 387 (same dies). Extremely rare. Some scratches, otherwise, very fine.

The recent discovery of an uncertain legend on coins this early is quite exciting. Unfortunately, the placing of the letters on the edge of the coins makes them difficult to read and no interpretation as to what they stand for has been put forward to date
